Enclaves of India and Bangladesh integrated with main land with execution of Land Border Agreement
- In Bangladesh, people in former Indian enclaves are in a festive mood. Having acquired Bangladeshi citizenship after 68 years of statelessness, they are hopeful and excited about their prospects as citizens.
- As many as 111 Indian enclaves were transferred to Bangladesh, and 51 Bangladesh enclaves to India, bringing into force the historic 1974 Mujib-Indira Land Boundary Agreement.
- Over 50,000 residents of 162 enclaves were given the chance to choose their citizenship during a 10-day joint survey held during 6th-16th July. Both governments have assured safe and secure passage to those opting to relocate till Nov. 30 this year.
Ranveer Singh Saini becomes first Indian Golfer to win Gold at Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles
- Ranveer Singh Saini has become the first Indian Golfer to win a Gold medal at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. The 14-year-old autistic golfer achieved the feat in GF Golf-Level 2 Alternate Shot Team Play event.
- Two years ago, Ranveer had become the first Indian golfer to win 2 Gold medals at the Asia Pacific World Games.
- 14-year old Prabhroop Sekhon also clinched Gold medals in 300-metres and 500-metres Roller Skating. An Autistic student, Sekhon is from ASHA School in Lucknow Cantt., where he was coached and selected for various camps at State and National level as one amongst 241 participants representing India.
CERN formally confers its associate membership to Pakistan
- The European Organisation for Nuclear Research, known as CERN, has formally conferred its associate membership to Pakistan, following completion of required internal ratification process by it.
- Pakistan has thus become the first member of CERN among Asian countries, said a press statement issued by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission.
- The associate membership will open a new era of cooperation that will strengthen the long-term partnership between CERN and the Pakistani scientific community. Pakistan can now participate in the governance of CERN, by attending meetings of its council.
At CERN (European Council for Nuclear Research), the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter – the fundamental particles.
Ravichandran Ashwin Presented With Arjuna Award
- India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was presented the Arjuna Award, which was conferred on him last year, by the Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. He was not present during the Award Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan on August 29, 2014 as he was a part of the India ODI team, which was touring England at that time.
- Ravichandran Ashwin has taken 124 wickets in 25 Tests, 139 in 99 ODIs and 26 wickets in 25 T20 internationals. He became the fastest bowler in 80 years to complete 100 wickets in his 19th Test in November 2013 against the West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium, which was the the farewell game of Sachin Tendulkar. He is the fifth fastest bowler in Test history to bag 100 wickets.
- The Chennai-born tweaker overtook the previous Indian record of one of the members of the famed spin quartet –off-spinner Erapalli Prasanna — to reach the 100-wicket mark in one fewer Test.
- Ashwin, 28, was the 48th cricketer to receive the prestigious award.
Arjuna Award
The Arjuna Awards are given by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, government of India to recognize outstanding achievement in National sports. Instituted in 1961, the award carries a cash prize of Rs 500,000, a bronze statuette of Arjuna and a scroll.
