Eminent Urdu writer Hamida Salim
  • Eminent Urdu writer Hamida Salim passed away at her residence in Jamia Nagar, New Delhi .
  • Salim was the first woman graduate of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
  • She had penned down many books including’ Shorish-e-Dauran’, ‘Ham Saath Thhe’,’Parchhaiyon Ke Ujale’ and ‘ Hardam Rawan Hai Zindagi’.
  • She was sister of the legendary poet Israrul Haqu Mazaj and aunt of famous lyricist Javed Akhtar.

22 scholars given ‘certificate of honour’ by President Mukherjee

  • President Pranab Mukherjee conferred the ‘Certificate of honour’ to 22 scholars of Sanskrit, Persian, Pali and Arabic.
  • The awards, which are given away on the Independence Day, were bestowed on 16 Sanskrit scholars including one in the international category, two Arabic scholars, three Persian scholar and one Pali scholar.
  • The distinction is given in recognition of substantial contribution of scholars in the field of Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic and Pali or Prakrit. In addition, the President gave away ‘Maharshi Badrayan Vyas Samman’ to eight young scholars in Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic and Pali.

Piku wins best film award at IFFM 2015

  • In Melbourne, on the second day of Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2015, the IFFM awards for 2015 for the best film was awarded to“Piku”.
  • The best director award went to Shoojit Sircar and Bhumi Pednekar of “Dum Laga Ke Haisha” for the best actress while best actor award was awarded to Irrfan Khan for his performance in “Piku”.
  • The programme was organised at the National Gallery of Victoria attended by various personalities including Australian High Commissioner to India Patrick Suckling, Indian High Commissioner Navdeep Suri, Consul General Manika Jain, Anil kapoor, Bhumi Padnekar, Simi Grewal, Sonam Kapoor,film director Shojit Sircar.

World Badminton: Saina Nehwal becomes 1st Indian player to win silver medal

  • Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal today became the first Indian to win a silver in the World Badminton Championship.
  • She lost the women’s singles summit clash to Spain’s Carolina Marin 16-21, 19-21 in Jakarta.
  • Olympic bronze medallist Saina had reached the finals of the event yesterday defeating Indonesia’s Lindaweni Fanetri.
  • Today’s defeat for Saina was the second successive loss for her in a major final as she went down to the same opponent in the All England Championships final earlier this year.
  • This was India’s fifth medal at the World Championship after PV Sindhu clinched the bronze twice in 2013 and 2014 and Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa notched up a bronze in women’s doubles at the 2011 edition.
  • Legendary shuttler Prakash Padukone was the first Indian to win a bronze at the 1983 edition.

Abhishek Verma clinches gold for India at Archery World Cup

  • India’s Abhishek Verma clinched the gold medal in the compound men’s individual section in the Archery World Cup Stage 3 competition in Poland . At Wroclaw, the world number 18 was at his best in the individual final as he held on to his lead to wrap up the issue 148 -145, against Esmaeil Ebadi of Iran.
  • The Asian Games silver medallist thus avenged his defeat to Ebadi at the Incheon 2014 in style. That time, Verma went down to the top seed Iranian 141-145.


First international army games 2015 end in Russia

  • In Russia, the closing ceremony of the first International Army Games was held , on Alabino Range in Moscow Region.
  • Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation General Sergei Shoigu attended the closing ceremony of International Army Games 2015 and awarded the winners of some of the contests with medals.
  • The International Army Games 2015 were held August 1st to 15th on 11 training ranges across three Russia’s military commands, the Western, the Southern and the Central. Fifty seven teams from 17 countries from Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America, which competed at the Games.
