PM announces ‘Start-Up India’ initiative to encourage entrepreneurship

  • The Prime Minister today announced the ‘Start-Up India’ initiative, which would encourage entrepreneurship among the youth of India.
  • In his Independence Day address, he said ‘Start-up India; Stand up India’ will promote bank financing for start-ups and offer incentives to enhance entrepreneurship and job creation.
  • He said each of the 1.25 lakh bank branches should encourage at least one Dalit or Adivasi entrepreneur and at least one woman entrepreneur.
  • The initiative, Modi said, would provide a new dimension to entrepreneurship and help in setting up of a network of start-ups in the country.

  • President Pranab Mukherjee has approved 67 Gallantry Awards to Armed Forces Personnel and members of Paramilitary Forces.
  • These include two Kirti Chakras, 10 Shaurya Chakras, one Bar to Sena Medal (Gallantry), 49 Gallantry Sena Medals, two Gallantry Nao Sena Medals and three Gallantry Vayu Sena Medals.
  • Naib Subedar Rajesh Kumar who sacrificed his life while fighting with terrorists in Handwara in Jammu and Kashmir has been posthumously awarded the second highest peacetime gallantry award Kirti Chakra.
  • Shaurya Chakra awardee Lieutenant Colonel Nectar Sanjenbam of the 21 Parachute Regiment, who led a group of Indian soldiers for the raid in the aftermath of the Manipur ambush in June has been awarded the Kirti Chakra.
  • Commandos of the Indian Army’s 21 Parachute Regiment – Special Forces who participated in the cross border raid were awarded eight gallantry awards.This is one of the largest number of medals bagged by a unit for a single operation in recent years.
  • Colonel Munindra Nath Rai, Commanding Officer of the 42 Rashtriya Rifles was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra. Colonel Rai was martyred while fighting militants on January 27th this year, just a day after receiving a Yudh Seva Medal during the Republic Day celebrations.
  • Reyaz Ahmad Lone constable of Jammu and Kashmir Police and Hira Kumar Jha second in command of 7th Batallion CRPF has been awarded Shaurya Chakra.

  • A total of 824
    central and state forces police personnel
    were awarded gallantry and other service medals on the eve of Independence Day.
  • The top honour of Presidents Police Medal for Gallantry has been given to three Punjab police officials, including slain SP Baljit Singh, who participated in the operation during the July 27 Gurdaspur attack in which three heavily armed militants were killed.
  • A maximum of 64 Police Medal for Gallantry have been received by country’s largest paramilitary force CRPF, largely for operations in the Left Wing Extremism hit states.
